The Third Third

At the End of a Life Well-Lived

Oliver Sacks, the 81 year-old professor of neurology and author, has written a moving essay upon learning his days are being numbered by multiple metastases in the liver. Long an intelligent observer of the human condition, Sacks has gained new perspective from the imminence of death and vows to live “in the richest, deepest, most productive way” he can, dispensing with all that is inessential and grateful for the privilege and adventure of his life on earth. It’s a good read.
